Almost 20 years after working as a vintage cellar hand at Seaview, John Edwards returned to the wine community in 1992 with his wife Helen, buying a property on Ravenswood Lane at Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills.
Hand-picked by the couple for its multitude of aspects and ancient gravelly soils, the 35ha property is now known as The Lane Vineyard. The first wines were produced in 1996 under the Ravenswood Lane label and their immediate success led to a joint venture with the Hardy Wine Company and John becoming vigneron for the Adelaide Hills brand Starvedog Lane. The success of this seven-year partnership was a perfect foundation for John to fully develop his own domain. In 2005, he left the venture to focus on producing single vineyard wines under his own label, The Lane Vineyard.
Under John and Helen’s guidance, the vineyard has grown to encompass over 70ha, boasting a state-of -the-art 500 tonne small batch winery and a thriving Bistro and Cellar Door (with two Chef’s hats – Australia’s equivalent of Michelin ratings). Marty Edwards now manages the estate and is just as passionate about these exceptional vineyards and winery. Marty follows a philosophy of minimal intervention, respect for organic principles and is committed to capturing the nuances of each site and variety. With the assistance of winemaker Michael Schreurs’ scientific brilliance and disciplined focus, the combination ensures the purity and vitality of the vines are reflected in exquisitely crafted wines with a true sense of place.
Appropriately, the Ravenswood Lane label has been recommissioned exclusively for Hallowed Ground and includes a bespoke range of three wines. Small parcels of fruit from the original plantings have been hand selected to produce wines with impeccable provenance.
Each wine is a delicious combination of site, personality and experience that brings the vibrancy of the vineyard into every glass.
Michael Schreurs. Michael has worked with Ravenswood Lane and The Lane since 2009. Previously, he spent six vintages as head winemaker at Henschke.
Marty Edwards has worked 15 vintages at The Lane as head viticulturist and general dogsbody. He can also be found in the winery daily when not in the vineyards. Having spent 11 years in the Australian Navy Clearance Diving (SEALS), Marty trained in viticulture at Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga.
