Beautifully-made and highly-collectable Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Waipara, New Zealand.
History & Background
Since 1991, Mountford Estate has focused on producing only premium Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling. In 2007 owners Kathryn Ryan and Kees Zeestraten bought the estate and have continued this legacy and have expanded to plant Riesling as well. The vineyards are located in the Waipara region, of North Canterbury, the Mountford vineyard grows on an area of land dubbed 'The Golden Mile'. The terroir of this particular region is a near perfect combination of heat, light and soil (clay over marl with limestone deposits). Although, Mountford Estate is not certified, huge importance is placed on practising biodynamic methods in the vineyard. In Kathryn and Kees believe that it is about more than just "being green" it is about respect from the moment a young vine is placed into the earth right through to winemaking practices. The highly esteemed Mountford Estate wines have great elegance and finesse and they regularly win accolades and medals worldwide.
The Winemaker (1997-2013) : CP Lin
Until August 2013, CP Lin was the winemaker at Mountford Estate. CP lost his sight at the age of 2 and has since developed a heightened sense of taste and smell. He speaks five languages and has a degree in mathematics from Canterbury University, as well as in wine science from Lincoln University. CP also has a photographic memory and has a remarkable ability to recall wines that he has tasted from all over the world. CP takes a Burgundian approach in the winery and the fruit is openly fermented, followed by cold maceration prior to spending 16 months in French oak. This allows the wines to fully develop their finely tuned and well-balanced flavours.
Waipara, New Zealand
This Pinot Noir deserves a place in every serious collector’s cellar. The evocative haunting fragrance of Pinot Noir leaps out of the glass and who can resist the temptation of the beautifully crafted raspberry and black cherry fruit found on the palate alongside the earthy, sous bois notes found on this complex palate. From one of the best Pinot Noir vintages in recent years – this wine is not to be missed and sold on allocation only.
This wine is called pure as it was not affected by botrytis in 2010. It is one of the most moreish wines that we have tasted! Thirst-quenching flavours of lime cordial and pear blossom sit alongside fresh nuances of sun-ripened peaches and apricots. The finish long and crisp and fills you with a desire to dive back into the glass!
